A Brief History of Honke
Tsuruki Soba
Famous Soba Restaurant at Sakamoto,Mt. Hiei |

|
|
| Traditionally, members
of the Japanese Imperial Family have occupied the position of chief-abbots
of Enryaku-ji, Mt.Hiei, head temple of Tendai School of Buddhism.
This explains why members of the Imperial Family in Kyoto frequently
visited Mt.Hiei. Given the location of the temple, it was difficult
to prepare food for these distinguished guests. Our ancestors had
the honor of cooking and delivering soba (buckwheat noodles) for them.
Our restaurant also provided soba for Tendai ascetics at the end of
their religious fast practice. |
 |
Sakamoto, the town at the foot of Mt.Hiei, was established and prospered
as the "Kitchen" of this famous complex of three thousand temples,
sixteen valleys, and three imposing pagodas. It also became the gate
of this renowned pilgrimage spot. Our restaurant was open in 1716
by Tsuruya Kihachi and has eversince served the the needs of all our
customers.

In 1911 the then Crown Prince (the future Emperor
Taisyo) visited Shiga Prefecture and honored us with eating our soba.
He liked it so much that he took back some Tsuruki Soba as a present
for his father, Emperor Meiji; Starting with that year until the death
of Emperor Showa, Honke Tsuruki was the officially appointed restaurant
making and delivering "toshikoshi soba"(soba eaten on the last night
of the year in order to make an auspicious passage to the New Year)
to the Imperial Family.
The restaurant continues to serve our numerous customers providing
excellent quality soba based on more than 280 years of genuine tradition. |
